Archival Treasures
Join Pam Whitenack, Director of the Hershey Community Archives, as she shares some of the many treasures and stories found in the Archives.
Hershey Community Archives was established in 1984 to create a place to care for Hershey's important historical records. A cooperative venture between Milton Hershey's corporations (The Hershey Company, Hershey Trust Company, Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company and Milton Hershey School) and The M.S. Hershey Foundation, the Archives provides a central location to collect, preserve and provide access to Hershey's rich historical legacy. The Archives collects and preserves business records, maps and plans, oral histories and photographs that document the history of Milton Hershey, his businesses and model community from 1857 to the present.
Materials in the Archives' collections are as varied as our community and founder. Just as the history of Hershey is not only about Milton Hershey, the Archives contains information about the many businesses, organizations, events and individuals that have shaped the community. Whitenack will share some of the treasures in the Archives collections and how they help us understand Hershey's rich history.
Pamela Whitenack has served as the Director of Hershey Community Archives since 1989. In that capacity she is responsible for managing an active archives serving the corporate and local community in Hershey.
She is the author of numerous essays about Hershey and the author of a book on Hersheypark and the co-author of Images of America: Hershey, a pictorial history of Milton Hershey’s model industrial town. She is past president of OHMAR (Oral History in the Mid-Atlantic Region), and is a frequent presenter at regional and national archival organizations.
Pam Whitenack is a 1978 graduate of Wittenberg University, Springfield, OH with a BA in History. In 1982 she received her Masters degree in American History from University of Delaware, with certification in Museum Studies. An elder at Derry Church, she lives with her husband and family in Hershey, PA.
