Sunday Classes
__________________________________________________

Church school classes for all ages meet year ‘round on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 am. From September through May, classes for children meet by grade level as indicated below.

Summer church school meets June through August.

For the youngest children...
The church nursery is supported with hired staff, parents and congregational volunteers from 8 am through the 10:30 am service every Sunday. Infants through age three meet in the Nursery rooms located on the upper level near the Sanctuary. During the church school hour, they learn that church is a loving and safe place through Bible stories, songs, crafts and play. Four- and five-year-olds meet in classrooms on the lower level. They learn about God's love and Christ's life.

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade…
meet in the Sanctuary from 9:15 am - 9:30 am, then move on to the lower level classrooms to participate in Sunday Funday workshop rotations. Children study one topic for a three- to five-week period using a variety of learning approaches. Each grade rotates through Art, Drama, Video, Computer and Bible Study.

Sixth, seventh and eighth graders…
complete year-long surveys of the Old Testament (6th) and the New Testament (7th and 8th) in preparation for Confirmation.

Ninth graders…
attend the Confirmation class. This class explores the Presbyterian faith. Confirmands are asked to create a statement of faith. Participants who choose to become church members will join during the Pascal Vigil worship service, which takes place on the night before Easter.

Tenth graders…
spend a year learning about the beliefs held by other world religions.

Eleventh & twelfth graders...
meet in the Youth Room during the church school hour. This class explores putting Christian faith into action, and often views faith through the lens of the culture in which we live. Film discussion is a popular activity with this group.

The mission of Derry’s Adult Education program…
is to help every adult fulfill his or her potential as a servant of Jesus Christ by receiving instruction in knowledge and skills to be faithful believers in Jesus Christ and members of the Church, applying God's Word in daily life, and reflecting critically on life experiences in the light of the Gospel. To support this mission, we offer a variety of classes: Baptism, small group study, book discussions, New Member Discovery Classes, Issues Class and many more.

During the 10:30 am worship service…
children ages four or five (or up to first grade are invited to participate in KIWI (Kids In Worship Instruction). This program is offered most Sundays from September through May during the 10:30 am worship service. Children meet the KIWI leader in the East Transept after the children's sermon, and actively learn more about all that happens during the worship service – from baptism and communion to worship responses and prayers.

During the week…
adults of all ages are invited to participate in Derry ’s small group ministry program, known as Journey in Faith (JIF) Groups. Some of the small groups meet in homes and some at the church; all give participants the opportunity to have a closer relationship with God and each other through study and fellowship.

Special intergenerational events…
feature activities appropriate for all ages, and are often scheduled during the Church School hour on Labor Day, Thanksgiving weekend, Christmas weekend, and Memorial Day. Welcome Back Sunday and Promotion Sunday are also special Sundays held at the beginning and the end of the school year.
